THE WILL OF GOD AS WE PRAY
This expositions was based on Matthew 6:9–18, while the emphases was based on verse 10b Matthew 6 “your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” By praying like this we want God’s perfect purpose will be accomplished in this world as well as in the next. This prayer allows us to obey and offer ourselves as doers of God’s will, asking Him to guide, lead us the means to accomplish His purpose.
Sometimes when we are praying we want to impose our own will on God. But Christians should know that we need the kingdom of God in our life and we honor Him when we do His will in obedience to His word. When we impose our will on God is not Jesus’ teaching of prayer because we did not pray according to the Jesus Christ teaching.
Jesus Christ prayed to God like this at the Garden of Gethsemane of which His disciples were witnessed (Matthew 26: 36–46) looking at verse 42b “ If it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your WILL be done” When Jesus Christ pray like this, He does really know or understand what will happen before and after, yes, He does, but pray that the will of God be done.
WHAT IS THIS WILL? Is the third and last part of the human personality, e.g.
- the emotions (Heart)
- the intellect (Mind)
- the will (Strength)
While the whole personality is soul, that is the combination of all that formed our nature when we are praying. “And He began to be sorrowful and troubled – My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (Matthew 26:36b–38)
In the beginning God created man a living soul in His own image (Genesis 1:27) means man is perfect in his emotion, perfect in his intellect and perfect in his will.
But after the man fell into sin, man personality was twisted out of balance in every area, only because he preferred to do their will than the will of God. This is why John the Baptist called all the human being into repentance (Matthew 3:1–11)
Paul said WILL is distorted and unbalanced by SIN . Ephesians 2:3, “All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desire and thoughts” A person’s will is that force with the spirit which causes one to do or not to do something.
Remember that EMOTIONS include only the desire to do something. On the other hand the WILL moves us TO DO IT, though, it requires a strong spiritual force. Romans 7:18, Paul said, “For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out” It is not the desire to do which is hardest for us, but the actual doing. When we are in the kingdom of God we do the will of God, though it may give us pain and suffering. So when we are praying we pray according to the will of God, this is regulation.
For examples Elijah prayed according to the will of Elijah’s master. Jesus Christ has power to manipulate His situation, but because of His followers who are powerless to save themselves, He prayed for the will of God to prevail, but how many time we have imposed our own will on God!
Therefore, Leaders, Pastors or Prophets, if your prayer is to satisfy nature is still in the position of twisting the will of God.
