CHRISTIAN AND SOCIAL HELP
TEXT USED:- Matthew 25:14–46.
Giving material help to the needy–things such as food, clothing and shelter to those who do not have it is what I called DIRECT HELP in this write up. Why working toward changes in the way the society is organized and governed so that certain kinds of problems can be ended, for example, child labor laws and fixing minimum wages for workers both private and public, that, I called SOCIAL HELP.
Let’s look at DIRECT HELP first. It is often necessary for us to offer DIRECT HELP to those in need. However, there are certain risks involved in this kind of help and unfortunately, it does not solve the long range problems which caused the need in first place. The results, it may encourage laziness and an attitude of dependence upon others to solve their problems. And it often allows the basic cause to remain unsolved.
Some people who are in need will not seek help from others. We must be aware that this is so and offer help when it is needed. Others however will ask for help.
Some will ask for money. There is a danger involved in giving money to such people which we must try to avoid, painful or not. Often those who ask for money do not spend it wisely.
There are several ways in which we might try to avoid the dangers of giving direct help to people who have asked us for money regardless of the need. And offer to provide the things they wish to buy instead of giving them money. Note, whatever you do, it is for the Lord.
The second way in which help may be provided for the needy is through SOCIAL.
Believers ought to try to do away with the CAUSES of poverty and human suffering. This often requires changes in the way that society is organized and governed.
Examples:- Agricultural workers and day laborers are unable to earn a large enough salary to take good care of their families. Several children have become ill due to lack of enough food.
SOCIAL HELP:- Organize a program of free food through your church to help needy families not otherwise, this is a direct help. OR cooperate with the workers to organize themselves and bargain with their employers in good way to obtain a just and adequate wage for their work. This would be social help.
Another, many of the people in your area are unable to find work, best solution:- Persuade a private company to build a factory or locate some other project which would provide long- term employment in that area. It makes your christian life grow and benefit.
Social help deals with the basic CAUSE of problem of the people. And it will deal with the SYMPTOMS of the problem. And education will keep the problem from being repeated in the future.
Today, there are some in our churches who call themselves followers of Christ but are not truly so. (You have no food, no job what do you need ?) At the time of the coming of Jesus Christ, this fact will become evident.
Know and do what is right keeps your faith alive. See Isaiah 58 : 10, And if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.
