THE BASIC FACTS OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH
The Apostles Creed was of value in the early church and is still of value in the church today.
Indeed, the words: “in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit” of the Great Commission became the basis for the apostles’ teaching on the Trinity, and the early church incorporated this in the first summary of the Christian faith, the Apostles Creed, which affirms, what Jesus taught to His Apostles and what the apostles believed and taught to be true.
Although the Bible teaches that God is One, it also tells us that He exists in three Persons. This doctrine is called the doctrine of the Trinity.
Christians learned about one God from Jewish people.
In the Old Testament. The Jewish people were looking forward to the coming of the coming of a great King who would free them from the Roman Empire and establish his own kingdom. They called this coming king the Messiah. They knew that the Messiah would have great, supernatural powers because God would uphold him and establish the Kingdom. Isaiah 42: 1 – 5 says, Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on Him and He will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or cry out, or raise His voice in the street. A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out. In faithfulness He will bring forth justice; He will not falter or be discouraged till He establishes justice on earth. In His law the islands will put their hope. This is what God the Lord says – He who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it.
As the first disciples followed Jesus they saw the miracles He performed and they listened to His teaching. They became convinced that He was indeed the promised Messiah and that, the Spirit of God was upon Him. However, the final thing which convinced them that Jesus was really God was His resurrection. Read Romans 1: 4, And who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.
Shortly before Jesus’ death, He taught the apostles about Himself and His relationship to the Holy Spirit. Read John 3: 16, For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. Also read John 14: 26, But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 15: 26 says, When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, He will testify, about me.
Jesus’ apostles became convinced that both Jesus and the Holy Spirit had not only come from God, but that they were of the very same being as God.
In other words, they were convinced that both Jesus and the Holy Spirit were God. Matthew 28: 19 says, Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In 2nd Corinthians 13: 14, Paul says, May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 1st Peter 1: 2 says, who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.
So, the Christians learned from the apostles that every true Christians had been chosen by God the Father, bought by the blood of God the Son, and filled by God the Holy Spirit.
